Katana Dansu Sword Chest - Edo Period Material - Red Elm while the beautifully worn surfaceThis exceptional Japanese Katana Dansu (sword chest) dates from the Edo period (16031868) and is crafted from Japanese cryptomeria (sugi). Designed specifically for the secure storage and transport of samurai swords, these long, shallow chests are among the rarer forms of Japanese tansu. Their distinctive proportions allowed katana and wakizashi to be stored horizontally, protecting the blades while keeping them readily accessible. Today, surviving
